The 1/3 Rule

With the watering restrictions, Denver water is trying to get people on board by telling them it’s now “less work” since we’re not allowed to water as much. That just sounds awesome! Let’s just kill our lawns, and then they won’t be any work at all, that is, until the weeds take over. I have been asked many times if it needs to be mowed weekly… The answer is still yes. One, you want to keep it at 2.5 inches, where it is healthiest. Two, if you let it go too long, and you end up cutting down more than 1/3 of the shoot it can damage the grass.

With watering restrictions, it is more important than ever to take care of your turf. Use organic fertilizers, wetting agents, proper watering practices, (watering in the am, multi-cycling…), and good mowing practices, (Using sharpened lawn mower blades, a clean mower deck for best mulching, etc.).
