Soil Temperatures- Spring 2013

With the weather in mind I thought I would throw up our usual map of soil temperatures… This season is remarkable different from last season in that soil temperatures are about 10-15 degrees colder than they were this time last year. If you remember, last year we had a lot of grass that was already growing- in fact we had multiple clients ask us to start early while this year we haven’t heard a peep other than the usual aeration and fertilization calls… Below is a look at the soil temperature map, and as you can see we haven’t quite hit the 50 degrees mark yet. Yes, the snow does impact the map for today but not that greatly. As one golf course superintendent said in his blog just recently this season, it’s a marathon, not a sprint, so don’t rush yourself considering it’s acceptable the grass isn’t growing so much quite yet…
