Get Those Sprinklers On!

We are often asked when to turn on sprinkler systems. Well, each year it is different.

The first thing to think about is whether or not we’re going to get another deep freeze. If your irrigation system is on, and pressurized, and we get a deep freeze you can wind up with a broken backflow preventer as well as other problems. (The backflow preventer is that strange looking device connected to your irrigation system on the outside of your house. Each year they break at many houses causing headaches and a couple hundred dollars) So, if you’re confident we’re not going to get another deep freeze, turn on your sprinklers! Believe it or not you should even hand water your grass in the winter, so now is as good a time as ever.

Additionally, according to a couple local golf course superintendents, our soil temperatures here in Littleton, Colorado have now reached the mid 50’s. What does this mean? This is the temperature at which the grass becomes active and starts growing. When the grass starts growing it needs its nutrients, and that’s water and fertilizer.

Lastly, as many of you saw, a local turf company was on the news stating this summer we will have a lot of lawns dying due to diseases and pests. And, when they say these lawns will be dying they mean permanently, not just going dormant. So, prevent this by getting your system up and running!
